Now taking new clients!

by Robert Carter on January 9, 2012

I haven’t taken on any new clients since 2010 because I’ve been so busy with my existing clients and other projects. So if you’re a small business owner in Chicago looking for help with web design, web hosting, SEO, Google Maps, or any web-related help, please contact me.

The Search Engine Marketing Job Market

by Robert Carter on October 18, 2010

If you live in the U.S. then you’ve probably heard the news — we’re in a recession. Or a depression. Or the great recession. Whatever. Unless you live in DC then you probably know at least a few people that are struggling for work. I would hate to be graduating with a liberal arts degree right now. It was hard enough back in 2003.

Anyway, if there’s one area that hasn’t been hit by the recession, it’s search marketing:

“The Search Engine Marketing Professional Organization (SEMPO) recently announced that the North American SEM industry will grow 14% this year to $16.6 billion! This contrasts with contraction in most other sectors!”

The hyped up language is thanks to press release over-enthusiasm, but I can attest to the strength of the market, at least here in Chicago. I get at least one call or email per week from recruiters and staffing agencies looking to hire people with SEO, PPC, web analytics skills (especially Omniture), and web copywriters.  So if you just graduated or you’re looking for a career change, being in the online marketing business is a great place to be. Lots of firms hire interns so you can get your foot in the door and people with just 1-2 years of experience are getting good salaries.

If you’re in the Chicago area, hit me up and I’ll send you in the right direction. There’s at least six staffing agencies here dedicated to placing people with web or creative skills.

Replacing the Old Google Keyword Research Tool

October 16, 2010

Google’s new keyword tool is now out of beta and for a while they were letting you use the previous version that many of us had grown accustomed to. The new version has a lot of improvements, especially if you’re putting together a PPC campaign (it’s much better at finding related keywords), but it’s not [...]

Yelp Adds New Business Categories

February 16, 2010

I got an email from Yelp this morning saying that they added new business categories for the more “long-tail” listings. Check out the list and make sure you update your listing if there’s a new category that fits you. Here’s instructions for updating your category: Applying a category to your business is a pretty simple [...]

Blogging to Generate Leads for Real Estate Agents

December 8, 2009

My first blog was set up in 2006 when I was embarking on my short real estate career (the markets made sure I wasn’t there very long!). I focused mostly on the challenges and issues that I was facing at the time, while throwing in a few funny anecdotes that come with the real estate [...]

Moving a Blog from Blogger to WordPress

November 23, 2009

I left a comment on Lead-Gen SEO yesterday about moving a blog from Blogger to self-hosted WordPress and I thought the information should be shared here on my blog. I’ve moved several blogs with this method and it works pretty well, although there’s no way that I know of that will preserve all of the [...]

Updating Your Business Information in Local Search and Yellow Pages Sites

September 24, 2009

One of the keys to improving your Google Maps listing is getting your business information listed in local search and Yellow Pages sites. While the quantity and quality of incoming links is the major factor in your organic search ranking, the number of times your business is mentioned across the web is a major factor [...]

Adding Your Business to Directories in Your Vertical

September 21, 2009

I created a new website for finding practitioners of alternative medicine, called ZenLocate.com. Finding websites like these is a great way to build links to your site, especially for local sites. Because the search algorithm for Google Maps measures the number of times your business name is mentioned across the web, it’s important to get [...]

Optimizing a Business by Neighborhood Location

September 2, 2009

Chicago is a huge city and most people search for local services and businesses by neighborhood. Google recognizes some Chicago neighborhoods as ‘belonging’ to the city and assumes that if you search for “wicker park restaurants”, you mean the Wicker Park neighborhood in Chicago. Some neightborhoods require a more refined search to produce a 10-pack. [...]

WebTiger Search Marketing Has Moved to Chicago

August 21, 2009

Well it’s official! We’ve moved to Chicago. I wanted to be absolutely sure that we were staying here before I announced it. I’ve traveled a lot this year, including a three month stint in Argentina and I’ve been living in Chicago for the summer. I originally planned to stay in Chicago just for the summer [...]
